Tangent Projects is a curatorial initiative set up to work with national and international emerging and mid-career artists on site responsive exhibitions and projects.
Founded in 2015, Tangent Projects didn’t have a physical space but instead was engaged in bringing artists and spaces together.
However, in early 2019 we rented a former motorcycle repair shop and set about converting it into 7 artist studios, a communal space – for meetings, performances, drawing classes, artist talks or just to eat lunch – and a small gallery space. At the same time Tangent Projects went through the process of becoming a cultural association (not for profit).
The remit of Tangent Projects gallery, is to not only offer an exhibition space for artists to experiment with their practice, but also a space to act as a counterpoint to the current gallery model by actively seek to redress and challenge inequality within the arts by exhibiting work by artists that are all too often marginalised.
The gallery opened in June 2019.
