The Cargo bar was the first place in Basel in which a bar and a cultural room were situated to function side by side in a single space. In a relatively small room many different elements meet: entertainment, a meeting place, drink culture, concert or background music, video, installations. Most people do not come explicitly for the art but rather they meet here by chance. This has a direct influence on the artist and his or her involvement. The artist cannot count on the ambience of the art space and the size of the room to defend the work; he is, so to speak, in a close fight with his audience.
